calzones and narnia

Nothing exciting last night.

I did not feel like making anything for dinner, so on the way home I stopped by the pizza place in Sanford and got myself a calzone. While I was down there picking it up, I was surprised to see that they had ripped down a building on First Street. I did not even notice. Actually, they had ripped it all down except for the back wall. Apparently there is some bizarre law for the area that says you cannot tear down a historic building, but you can 'remodel' it. The bare minimum to keep for remodeling is one wall. So developers tear down an entire building except for one wall and build around it. I have actually seen this happen a couple of times around Sanford.

I went home and ate my calzone. TO my surprise the 'Narnia' movie finally showed up on pay per view. I have been waiting to see this movie. I was pleased to see Tilda Swinton played the white witch. I thought she was an excellent choice. I first became aware of this lady in the movie 'Constantine' where she played the angel Gabriel. They bound of her boobs tightly to give her a more man-like chest and because of her strange face the result was she came out looking asexual, neither male or female but a little bit of both, which I am sure was their intention.

Tilda also once did a brief stint of performance art where she spent 5 days inside a glass box sleeping. Well, 8 hours a day. Not sure how she managed to stay asleep the entire time. I bet she took some drugs and just conked out.

My review of the narnia movie was 'eh'. Sometimes I am amazed that I can recall details of a book I read almost two decades ago. For example, in the book when the boy first killed the wolf, Aslan said 'give me your sword' the boy gave it to him and Aslan smacked him with the flat of the blade and said 'always clean your sword'. I thought this was a rather important point, that Aslan was trying to convey the graveness and seriousness that came with killing. In the movie he just said 'clean your sword' and that was that. It made me feel something was missing.

A few things did not come out very good in the movie, although it was no fault of the movie makers. Some things I simply did not buy in the book, and they got translated into the movie. For instance, whenever Peter drew out his sword and waved it around. He looked like an idiot. He looked like a 12 year old kid with a sword. That is the feeling I got from the book as well. I recall reading it thinking 'Why is some big ass centaur listening to this little pipsqueak? Why doesn't he just laugh at him and then turn around and squirt out some big horse turds at him?'

You know, that is a good question, what do Centaur turds look like. Horses eat grain so they have big fluffy green turds they really are not too offensive once they have dried out a little. However, centaurs have human faces, so they eat human food. And probably a lot of it because they are so big. Are their turds human or horsy? Why do I care?

Both the movie and the book also brought to question the nature of the sexuality of the kids as they grew up. They clearly did not take any wives, were they practicing celibacy for the whole 20 years? They were the only humans there, and they had ultimate power because they were kings. Did the boys rut with some nymphs while the girls strutted with some satyrs? Satyrs in mythology were known for their lust and chasing of girls. Perhaps Mr. Tumnus stuck around for other reasons. Am I sick for wondering about this?

No real plans for the weekend. Ripping out a bathroom and then dinner with friends.
